This is an additional catalogue note for this lot; Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild, CBE, GM, FRS was born in 1910 to Charles and Rozsika Edle Rothschild. Educated at Harrow and at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was known for his indulgent lifestyle, collecting art, books and driving a Bugatti. Rothschild was part of the Cambridge Apostles, a secret society and was recruited to work for MI5 during World War II. After the war, he became chairman of the Agricultural Research Council and worldwide head of research at Royal Dutch/Shell. He was also a security adviser to Margaret Thatcher and headed the Central Policy Review Staff (the "Think Tank"). He had been married twice and was father to seven children when he died in 1990.
