THE FIRST SEPARATE EDITION OF JOYCE'S EARLIEST PUBLISHED PIECE, a review of Ibsen's play When We Dead Awaken printed in the Fortnightly Review for 1 April 1900 while Joyce was a student at University College, Dublin. The piece prompted a letter of thanks from Ibsen himself, forwarded to Joyce by William Archer: 'It fell upon him like a benison at the beginning of his career. He had entered the world of literature under the best auspices in that world.' (Ellmann, 77) The 1930 edition was printed for the Ulysses Bookshop by H.D.C. Pepler at St Dominic's Press.
