Lot Essay

Born in Italy, Romani lived and worked in Paris, studying under the historical painter Ferdinand Roybet, with whom she shared a studio. Primarily a painter of biblical subjects, the present work is probably a self-portrait of the artist as Salomé and a reduced version or finished sketch of a painting that Romani completed in 1898. It is probable that this version was painted as a gift for her teacher, Roybet.
