Lot Essay

Justinian Gantz, described in the East India Gazette as 'Miniature Painter', was the eldest son of the John Gantz, an artist of Austrian extraction and employed as a draughtsman and surveyor by the East India Company from about 1800 to 1803. Justinian helped his father run the family's lithographic press in Madras and appears to have specialised in making drawings of European houses in Madras. Seven such studies are in the India Office Library (M. Archer, British Drawings in the India Office Library, London 1969, II, pp. 605-6)
