Lot Essay

Juwon Aderemi is a Nigerian-based contemporary artist born on January 1st 2000, who uses different medium in expressing his art. However he basically works with oil, charcoal and acrylic on canvas. Juwon Aderemi has shown interest in art since he was just a little boy, as he re-creates funny and comic characters he came across. His in-depth pursuit in art began however after he had a domestic mishap which confided him to the four walls of his room. During this period, he searched through the internet and discovered artworks of painters and said to himself “If they can, I can do this.”

Artist statement:
A resounding theme in my works is; the love for the forgotten. In the solace and confines of my room, I often find myself thinking about how different things used to be. Our clothing styles, our cultures and traditions, gender roles, family setup even the way art is represented evolved so much. While I'm grateful for some of these changes, there's still a longing for some elements of the past; the simplicity of the human condition.
The human race has always experienced a constant change. This established perception about life has thrown the human race into different phases and age, a time when different things were seen as a norm, people acted and thought differently, certain things were held of prestige at different points and daily endeavour took different forms. However just like every other thing which has two sides to it; change though very necessary and important can in some ways be problematic.
Thus my artworks are developed from the infusion of the norms of the then and the now. The times when we thought life couldn't be lived any better than it was being lived and the now that we never anticipated coming so soon, the beauty they experienced is unknown to many and thus the memories about them bleak. My works reflects these feelings, they are neither ultramordern or traditional but rather a perfect blend of both. I endeavour to put my art works to the world and give them the opportunity to see the beauty in embracing things of the past while still holding on to the civilization we have. I intend on presenting through my art, an infusion of antiquities and the new to present a certain form of uniqueness, an enlightenment on the fact that the human race is indeed a race which occurs in different phases and not one, and that we humans are to take cognisance of that which was and ensure its reflection in that which is. As we look forward to the future, we must never forget the lessons of the past.
