[KAFKA, Franz (1883-1924)]. A portrait photograph of Franz Kafka, bust length, [late 1917], REPUTEDLY THE PORTRAIT BELONGING TO THE WRITER'S MOTHER, 221 x 168mm, framed and glazed; [with] a portrait photograph of Kafka, three-quarter length, [in 1906, after receiving his doctorate in law], by 'American Photo Studio, Prague Vaclavske nam 15', the verso printed with a blank postcard form. Provenance: Kafka's mother, Julie Kafkova (according to her granddaughter, Vera, the framed photograph used to hang above her bed); Ottla Kafkova (1892-1943, Kafka's favourite sister); her daughter Vera Projsova-Saudkova; collection of her first husband, Karel Projsa (1912-1972); acquired by Vaclav Cihak, together with the collection of Kafka's last letters to his family, 1922-24, which were published in Franz Kafka. Diposy rodicum z let 1922/1924 (Prague, 1990); given by him to Dr Martin Krajicek; presented by him to the present owner (information from an accompanying letter by Dr Martin Krajicek).
