Lot Essay

Kate Perugini was the daughter of the novelist Charles Dickens. She first married Charles Alston Collins, the Pre-Raphaelite painter whose best known work, Convent Thoughts, is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. After his death she married the artist Carlo Edward Perugini. At the age of 21 she had sat to Millais for his painting The Black Brunswicker (The Lady Lever Art Gallery).
