Lot Essay

Another version of 'View of Rokin' is part of the collection of The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and is illustrated in H. Redeker and A. Venema, Kees Maks 1876-1967, Amsterdam 1976, p. 57.
Maks' way of painting clearly shows the influence of G.H. Breitner (1857-1923). In 1898 the artist's father owns two extensive studios on the Prinseneiland in Amsterdam: one for his son and one for Breitner. The only condition for Breitner to use the apartment, was to teach his son Kees.
