Lot Essay

Granddaughter of the distinguished collector Wang Nanping (1924–1985), Kelly Wang grew up studying the masterpieces in her family’s collection. She learned the techniques of traditional Chinese paintings from Chen Ruikang (1935–), a student of Pu Ru’s and received a master’s degree in Chinese art from Columbia University. An intercultural artist, Wang traverses boundaries established by time and space; her style features an amalgamation of diverse mediums and eclectic elements. By working with traditional Chinese and post-industrial materials, Wang frequently pays homage to her upbringing and artistic training. Her subliminal and liberal application of ink and pigment reflects the flowing spirit of Chinese paintings. Wang’s works have been acquired by and exhibited at the Princeton University Art Museum.
