Lot Essay

Norbert Lynton comments on the present work, 'It's outline is almost as crisp a frame as that of the earlier figure [Flat standing figure, 1953], and the upper part of the body is almost as flat, but there is a plasticity even about this upper portion (a plasticity, then, of surface) which, underlined by the swelling belly and the unusually massive legs, suggests a new interest in mass, weight and texture and their inherent drama' (se N. Lynton, op. cit, p. 31).
