KIP, Joannes (1653-1722). Britannia Illustrata, or Views of Several of the Queens Palaces as also the Principal Seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain. London: Joseph Smith, 1714-15.
2 volumes, 2o (453 x 315 mm). Engraved title in vol. I, letterpress title in vol. II, two letterpress tables and 152 double-page engraved plates by Kip after Leonard Knyff and Kip, some folding, and 8 plates of coats-of-arms, on guards (table in vol. I shaved at head and with outer margin renewed, small hole within image of plate 24 in vol. II, few other small marginal holes, occasional soft creases, some light spotting, few small stains). Contemporary blind-panelled calf, spines gilt (front covers detached, a bit worn). Provenance: Charles de Erbach-Fürstenau and John William Graefe (bookplate dated 1794).
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPOGRAPHICAL BOOKS OF THE 18TH CENTURY. An early edition of Kip's topographical bird's-eye views of the castles, palaces and country houses of England. The work was first published in 1707 with 80 plates under the title Britannia illustrata; by 1716 three more volumes were added to it, and in 1728 a supplement was issued. The plates produced for this earlier work were engraved from "bird's-eye" drawings of Leonard Knyff (1650-1722), a fellow Dutchman who had come to London sometime after 1676. As the work expanded, plates were added by Kip and other eminent artists, forming a valuable record of the houses of the landed gentry during this flourishing era of expansion. See Berlin Kat. 2328.
