Engraved map of Rome and Latium, 322 x 480 mm (trimmed to the image edge, 3 tiny chips to margins).
A rare Lafreri School map of Rome and Latium. The publisher of the map is unknown, but it is closely based on Eufrosino de Volpaia's the Campagna Romana of 1547, commissioned by Pope Paul III, and now in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. Maps from the Lafreri School usually appeared in composite atlases with mostly Italian maps engraved by various cartographers, printed and compiled in the second half of the 16th century. "The maps produced by this galaxy of talent in Venice and Rome were issued and sold separately" (Tooley). Between 1540 and 1570 Italy was the center of cartography. Antonio Lafreri (1512-1577) a map seller and publisher in Rome was one of the first to issue an engraved title page for an atlas of that period, and the name "Lafreri Atlas" or "Lafreri School Atlas" is derived from his title-pages. Lafreri did not produce many maps, but was a major map seller. Lago II p.274, Tooley 1939 no.478.
