Lowry's people, even when depicted in large groups or crowds, are often very isolated figures. Each character dominates his or her own space and often has no interraction with any other figure. The present work depicts three individuals and a dog, standing extremely close to one another yet seemingly completely separate. Each is looking in a different direction, as though slightly embarrassed to be seen in such close proximity. By emphasising the differing heights and sizes of the characters Lowry brings to the picture a touch of quirky, dour humour.
