LAWRENCE EDWARD GRACE OATES (1880-1912)
Telegram to his mother, date stamped Colwyn Bay, 14 June 1910, on printed telegraph form (140 x 220mm.), 'Gates [sic] Plas Eirias Colwyn Bay Am now going out in terra nova. Lawrence'.
[With] Herbert George PONTING (1871-1935). Captain L.E.G. Oates by the stable door, gelatin silver print, 161 x 119mm., stamped 'All rights reserved by Capt. R.F. Scott, R.N., C.V.O.' in red on verso; and four other photographs, carte de visite portraits of Oates as a child, and of his mother and father; a circular image by the London Stereoscopic Company inscribed 'Mother' on lower margin (apparently in the autograph of one of Oates's siblings), 110mm. diameter; and a postcard of a plaque erected to Captain Oates by his brother officers.
Oates's relationship with his mother was perhaps the most intense in that undemonstrative officer's life. As he handed over his diary to Wilson to pass on to her on the day before his death in the wastes of the Ross Ice Shelf, he confided that she was the only woman he had ever loved. (6)
