Fischbacher was born in 1913 as the eldest son and heir to the famous Swiss Fischbacher family company, a firm specialising in raw fabrics. Too energetic to fit into the old company, he emigrated to New York in 1937 to found his own company which focused on designing and finishing fabrics. Due to World War II and the subsequent collapse of the European market, Fischbacher turned to running a huge dairy farm in New Jersey before returning to Europe to take over the family business in 1953. He transformed it into a modern company introducing his New York experiences. As with business, he decided on another path for the family collection of art. The collection was traditionally focused on Swiss art including the core of the collection of the current Giovanni Segantini Museum in St. Mortiz. Fischbacher introduced international movements, like Russian constructivists and South East Asian art thus pushing the quality to an outstanding level throughout. Fischbacher sadly died on 2 January this year. As well as being a successful businessman and a collector with the true eye of a connoisseur, he will be remembered as a great sportsman (amongst others achievements he was a member of the 1948 Swiss Olympic team in skeleton) and honorary president of the famous Cresta club in St. Mortiz. Christie's is proud and honoured to offer these works from the Fischbacher collection.
