Born in Chicago, Leonard Reedy is known as Chicago's Cowboy painter of the Old West. He worked in both watercolor and oil, having studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. It is said that Chicago restaurants have framed Reedy paintings and drawings in lieu of cash.

The remaining watercolors from the original set given to Eleanor Roosevelt are still on exhibition at the Eleanor Roosevelt Historic Site, Val Kill, Hyde Park, New York.
