LI XIONGCAI (1910-2001)
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE HONG KONG COLLECTION (LOTS 1459-1461)The recipient of the three pieces in the collection, Xianhua, is the late Hong Kong Taoist priest Lai Hin-wa. He was the head of the Hong Kong Taoist Association and the permanent chief priest of Fung Ying Seen Koon, an important Taoist temple in Hong Kong. Under his guidance, Fung Ying Seen Koon made numerous achievements in promoting Taoism, education, charity and community development. Lai was an enthusiast in supporting art and culture. He set up The Centre for Studies of Daoist Culture in collaboration with the Chinese University of Hong Kong and organised Taoist music concerts. He also helped to promote the exchange and communication between Taoist associations globally which greatly facilitated the connectivity in religious studies. He was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong government in 2008 for his contributions in community service and the development of religion in Hong Kong. Born in Zhaoqing in Guangdong province, he was a relative of Li Xiongcai, the master of Lingnan Style paintings. Li Xiongcai gave several of his finest works to Lai Hin-wa and called him a good nephew in the paintings, which reflects the close relationship between the two.
