Lot Essay

Similar in scale, technique and composition to Christ and the Woman of Canaan in the collection of Louis-Antoine Prat (P. Rosenberg, Dessins français de la collection Prat XVIIe-XVIIIe-XIXe siècles, exhib. cat., Paris, Louvre, and elsewhere, 1995, no. 22).
A picture of this subject, now untraced, was listed in Cheron's posthumous sale; London, 26 February 1726, lot 66 (F. Russell, 'Louis Cheron: a sale catalogue', The Burlington Magazine, CXXX (June 1988), p. 466).
