Lot Essay

Part of a group of nude studies drawn by Boullongne while teaching at the Académie. Another, dated 1710, is illustrated in A. Schnapper and H. Guicharnaud, Louis de Boullogne, Paris, n.d., no. 41. Further nudes are in the Achenbach Foundation, San Francisco (P. Rosenberg, French Master Drawings of the 17th and 18th Centuries in North American Collections, exhib. cat., Toronto, Art Gallery of Ontario and elsewhere, 1972, no. 17), in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York and other museums. Most of these drawings of male nudes come from an album broken up in the 1950s.
