Lot Essay

Born in Jiangsu, Lu Hui graduated from Nanjing University of the Arts and further studied at Peking University. Rendered entirely in black and white and in a photorealistic close-up, Lu’s technique involves repeatedly dyeing the paper with ink to create a thick layering often seen in Western oil paintings. The negative space, appeared as small white leaves intertwined through the overlapping vines, gives viewers breathing space and deepens the perception of space.
