Further details
This portrait of Sir Lawrence Gowing, the British painter and Art Historian friend of Freud, started out as a simple delicate First Version etching with minimal lines. In this Second Version Freud has heavily re-worked the plate with experimental pitting and scratches to create a very expressive portrait.
Lucian Freud (1922-2011) is best known for his highly realistic portraits. Born in Berlin to Jewish parents and the grandson of Sigmund Freud, he moved to Britain and became a British Citizen before the outbreak of World War II. He studied art in London and formed part of a group known as The London School. From the 1950's he began to focus on portraiture and nude studies. Many of his subjects, including this work, were of friends and family which makes the portraits intimate and autobiographical.
Sir Lawrence Gowing (1918-1991), a Quaker born in North London, became recognised as a painter during the 1940's and begun teaching later that decade. As a Professor of Fine Art that he started to write art monographs, which included masters such as William Hogarth, Cezanne and Lucian Freud. During the 1960's and 1970's he organised major exhibitions in London and New York. He was a Trustee of the Tate Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery and The British Museum. In 1978 he was elected associate of the Royal Academy.
