The aristocrat Lepic was a man of numerous talents: painter, engraver, and sculptor - he was even a dog breeder. Friend of Edgar Degas, with whom he worked on new forms of etchings, he participated in the first two Impressionist exhibitions in 1874 and 1876. The following year he settled in the village of Berck, on the coast south of Tréport where he stayed just until 1885. His studio was signaled by a post, adorned with a striking pavilion in two L's and a crown of count as well as the symbol of a pierced basket. The years in Berck were very productive: he painted sea landscapes and scenes of everyday life of fishermen on the beach. In 1881, he exhibited 100 maritime paintings. As we know that the painter changed his signature in 1879 in 'Le Pic', the date of execution of this work must have been between 1877 and 1879. The beach of Berck was one of the most important grounding places for boats in France, which our painting illustrates.

L'aristocrate Lepic était un homme aux nombreux talents: peintre, graveur, sculpteur - il était même éleveur des chiens. Ami d'Edgar Degas, avec qui il travaillait sur de nouvelles formes d' eaux-fortes, il participa aux deux premières expositions des Impressionnistes en 1874 et 1876. L'année suivante il s'installa dans la village de Berck, sur la côte sud du Tréport où il sejourna jusqu'à 1885. L'atelier est signalé par un mât, agrémenté d'un pavillon frappé de deux L et d'une couronne de comte ainsi que d'un symbolique panier percé. Les années à Berck furent très productives: il peignit des marines et la vie quotidienne des pêcheurs sur la plage. En 1881, il exposa cent tableaux maritimes. On sait que le peintre changea sa signature en 1879 en 'Le Pic', la date d'exécution de cette oeuvre se situe entre 1877 et 1879. La plage de Berck était une des plus importantes places d'échouage pour les bateaux en France, ce que notre tableau illustre.
