LUDOVICO CARDI, IL CIGOLI, A STANDING DRAPED MAN (RECTO); SKETCH OF A NUDE SEATED MAN (VERSO), BRUSH, GREY WASH HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE ON BROWN PREPARED PAPER (RECTO); RED CHALK (VERSO)

The painterly technique and chiaroscuro effect of the drawing on the recto, as well as the large size of this sheet, are characteristic of Cigoli’s drawings and can be compared to a number of the artist’s sheets in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. 8920 F, 8995 F, 19113 F, 19115 F and 8980 F; see M.L. Chappell, Disegni di Lodovico Cigoli (1559-1613), Florence, 1992, nos. 6, 6b, 111-114, pl. III, ill.). On the verso of this sheet is a confidently-drawn nude study, which, like the drawing on the recto, does not appear to relate to any surviving paintings by the artist.

Lot Essay
