Sir Denis Mahon dates the drawing to late in Ludovico's career, circa 1605-10. Comparable drawings with the same fluid use of the wash are formerly in the Ellesmere Collection, datable 1605-8, and at Windsor Castle, of 1605 (Bologna, op. cit., no. 17-8, pls. 11-12). Another similar drawing, albeit of circa 1590, is in the Louvre, C. Legrand, La réforme des trois Carracci, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Louvre, 1994, no. 8.
Babette Bohn kindly confirmed the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
