Lot Essay

This delicately painted Ecce Homo is one of a number of versions painted by Morales, each with minor variations. This picture appears to be one of the earlier treatments of the subject, comparable to the one in the Garcia Collection, Spain. It is also similar to another version in the Museo del Prado (no. 27770, measuring 40 x 28 cm.). The softer handling of the latter would suggest that it post-dates the present work, which may even have served as its prototype.
