MAD COMICS
THE GAINES FAMILY COLLECTION Few men have influenced the comic industry as deeply as has Bill Gaines. After inheriting a small company, Educational Comics, from his father in the mid 1940s, he shifted the emphasis from education to entertainment and capitalized on the post WWII growth of the field. Gaines first ventured into western and romantic titles, then (in early 1950) introduced his New Trend in comics reading. Five horror and science fiction titles soon became, with their daring and imaginitive tales, the standard of excellence spawning a generation of fanatics and contemporary mass media entertainment such as Weird Science, Tales From The Crypt and Mad TV. Always particular about references and the archiving of his efforts, Gaines took great pains to save not only the original black and white drawings used to produce the comics, but also had a few issues of each new book carefully wrapped, sealed and stored in New York. In 1989, when the vault was opened, these same issues in unread, near mint condition were revealed. Stored under ideal conditions for nearly four decades they retained vibrant colors, white pages and incredible cover gloss. This is the first such set to be sold directly by the Gaines family.
