Cardinal Maurizio di Savoia sponsored the elaborate festivities at Rome to celebrate the election of Ferdinand, king of Bohemia and Hungary to Holy Roman Emperor. Under the architect Orazio Turini the piazza facing his palazzo at the Monte Giordano was transformed into a large theater, and a triumphal arch and fountain were erected. In these magnificent surroundings "lingue di luce" and "macchine di fuoco" were displayed, together with music and dances glorifying the Austrian Emperor and poetic tributes, printed here, exalting his virtues. Berlin Kat. 3046; BM/STC 17th c. Italian II, p. 531; Cicognara 1444 (giving different plate count); Fagiolo, Bib. della festa barocca a Roma, 134.
