Husain has touched upon numerous themes in his distinguished career. He has painted the Raj series inspired by Colonial India, Mother Teresa, great Hindu epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana and many great cities, such as Rome, Venice, Calcutta and Benares.
Husain visited Benares in the early 1960s with his contemporary, Ram Kumar. This work titled Benares reveals Husain's impression of the city with its numerous temples, ghats and havelis crowded together and leaning heavily on to one another.
