Lot Essay
Husain's art has always been an expression of his personal vision. He incorporates images associated with childhood memories of popular Indian myths and the Indian countryside, specifically the life of the common man.
In the late 1950s Husain did a series of works entitled Doll's Wedding that drew inspiration from the charms of the rural world, specifically the rituals associated with a traditional Indian wedding. Here he has created a fantasy celebration using the familiar bright vibrant colors, and captured elements of dance and music that are inherently part of Indian weddings. The bright red background, the color favored by most Indian brides, set against shades of orange, yellow and green infuse the work with a cohesive and positive energy.
Unlike his later works of the 1960s, this early work still sees a stronger use of color over line. The overall effect is a joyous melée of colors, that accurately recalls the revelry and exuberance of a wedding celebration.
