Lot Essay
This untitled, (as were most of Cavell's works) 'sculpted painting' is a variation of one of his most famous creations produced a few years after Cavell had been presented as the leader of the kinetic artists at the Salon Comparaison in 1971, this work, with its shining and clear surface, derives its movement from its ability to play with light and shadow. A closely related work is illustrated, P. Rapin, L. Gnat-Bécart, trans. N. Choi, (ed. 88 Gallery London), Marc Cavell, Light at Work, London, 2011, pp. 164-165 and a similar painting was sold, Pierre Bergé & Associés, Paris, 19 June 2007, lot 124 (14,000 EUR). See lot 150 in this sale for a further biographical note on the artist.
