Lot Essay

This work is sold with a photo-certificate from David McNeil.

A few dark lines are enough for Chagall to depict the wedding of this romantic couple, floating in a dream-world. Brides and swooning married couples regularly appear in Chagall's paintings, completing Chagall's passion for love themes.

Weddings fascinated Chagall since his childhood, as he describes at length in My Life the procedure of traditional wedding ceremonies in provincial Russia (pp. 35-36), as well as remembering all the details of his own wedding in 1915 with Bella. Chagall was drawn by the pure bond of love and the intensity of emotions implied in the wedding celebration.
