Lot Essay

Dwight Miller suggested, on the basis of a photograph, that Franceschini executed this drawing in preparation for a print by F.A. Meloni (D.C. Miller, Marcantonio Franceschini, Turin, 2001, p. 351, fig. 8). The composition of the print itself relates to a painting by Franceschini now in the collection of the Banco Popolare dell'Emilia Romagna in Modena, painted in the last year of the artist's life (D.C. Miller, op. cit., no. 122b). In the present drawing Franceschini adjusted the position of Leah's right arm, a change Meloni followed in his print.
