Although this drawing is traditionally associated with the very large gesso panel which Margaret Macdonald made for the Ingram Street Tea Rooms in 1900 it also relates to a decorative panel which Margaret made for the over-mantel at Dunglass Castle in 1900. The latter includes only one figure at each side holding the garlands and appears, from the surviving indistinct photographs, to be much more linear and graphic in its handling, like Frances Macdonald's Honesty frieze of circa 1896-97 [see lot 92]. The drawing is very similar to, but not absolutely identical with, the gesso panels produced for Ingram Street. There is no sign of the drawing having been squared up for transfer to a larger scale and it is possible that this watercolour was produced for individual display after the completion of the panels; it was certainly included in the Turin International Exhibition of Decorative Art in 1902.
