Lot Essay

Hugh Hefner launched his new magazine for men by announcing Monroe as the magazine's first Sweetheart of the Month, using Tom Kelly's now famous nude photograph of Marilyn. The first issue was not numbered as Hefner did not know if it would be successful enough to merit the publishing of further editions. The maiden issue is said to have sold out in less than two weeks, ensuring the future success of the magazine and the playboy brand.
