Lot Essay

The first painting relates to one of the pictures painted for Cardinal Flavio Chigi in 1658-9, which remains in Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, the Portrait of Mario Nuzzi at the easel, painted by Mario himself in collaboration with Giovanni Maria Morandi. The flower piece as well as the sculpted urn depicted in this Portrait are repeated with only minor variants in the present lot.

The Chigi series also includes the celebrated Four Seasons painted by Mario in collaboration with Filippo Lauri, Carlo Maratti, Giacinto Brandi and Bernardino Mei.
