Lot Essay

In May 1896 Marius Bauer travels to Moskou to illustrate the crowning of czar Nicolas II and his wife Alexandra Fjodorovna for the Dutch magazine De Kroniek. The building on the background is the cathedral of the Ascension of Mary where the royal ritual just ended. We know from Bauers letters, that he was fascinated by the wealth and beauty of this grand parade.
