"The chateau was begun by the Duc de Richelieu under the direction of the architect Jacques Le Mercier in 1631 ... Richelieu extended his plans to include a church and a village ... Today the chateau is gone, but the village remains as one of the most consistent examples of town planning on a small scale" (Millard).
