[MARQUIS VICTOR RIQUETI DE MIRABEAU (1715-1789)]

L'Ami des Hommes: ou, Traité de la population. [Avignon]: 1758-[1760]. 6 parts in 2 volumes, 4° (251 x 190mm). Engraved frontispiece by St. Fessard after N. Blakey. (Frontispiece soiled at margins, some browning and light spotting.) Contemporary French mottled sheep, spines gilt with repeated thistle motif, marbled endpapers, red edges (covers scuffed).

Second edition, much expanded from the first published in 1756. Part four is entitled 'Précis de l'Organisation; ou Memoire sur les Etats Provinciaux', part five 'Memoire sur l'Agriculture', while the final part consists of two sections, the 'Réponse à la Voierie' and the 'Tableau Oeconomique avec ses explications'. Although often attributed to the influence and even the pen of François Quesnay, founder of the physiocrats, Mirabeau's work was written before the two men of such like beliefs had actually met.
