32o (119 x 96 mm), Engraved title-page, engraved colophon, 29 engraved plates, all with publisher's hand-coloring. (Some minor browning, some offsetting from plates.) Original half linen, gray boards, engraved paper labels on covers, both with publisher's hand coloring.

Soon after completing his apprenticeship in 1778, John Marshall (ca.1755-1825), the son of printer Richard Marshall, introduced children's books to the family business. "He was to become not only the chief competitor of the Newbery descendants, but also a publisher who was to carry forward new ideas into the changed light of the nineteenth century" (Alderson & Oyens, p. 62).
