Plaquette in-8 (214 x 137 mm). 23 pages (titre inclus dans la pagination). Couverture originale, imprimée sur papier vert, titre dans un encadrement typographique formé de 26 (sens vertical) et 13 (sens horizontal) éléments (demi-cercles avec une couronne radiale), aux angles trois demi-cercles composés de 3 pièces typographiques avec une couronne radiale (agrafes enlevées et remplacées par une couture, insérés dans une couverture protectrice de papier japon et papier peigne), étui moderne en cartonnage vert. Provenance: bibliothèque Schocken -- Hauswedell & Nolte (vendu en 1976) -- Vente à Paris en 1979.

Cet exemplaire correspond en tous points au tirage 1a, dont les détails sont donnés par Bert Andréas (Le Manifeste Communiste de Marx et Engels). Cette première édition fut bien imprimée à Londres et porte la mention sur la couverture (et sur la dernière page): "Prolétaires du monde entier, unissez-vous!"
Selon la classification de Thomas Kuczynski, cet exemplaire correspond à la variante B6c. Le bibliographe recense seulement 26 exemplaires de cette première édition mais aucun dans les grandes bibliothèques publiques internationales (pas d'exemplaire dans la Library of Congress, ni à la Lenin Library de Moscou, ni à la British Library, ni la BnF, ni à la Staatsbibliothek de Berlin). Parmi ces 26 exemplaires, seuls 19 sont complets de leur couverture originale.
"'Admitted by every serious student of society to be one of the outstanding political documents of all time' -- to quote the late Harold Laski -- the 'Manifesto of the Communist Party' outlined the main positions of Marxism as a theory of history, a criticism of Socialist doctrine and a programme of revolutionary action. It was commissioned by the second congress of the Communist League, a largely German body of revolutionary exiles, which met in London in November-December 1847. The Communist League's hall was in Great Windmill Street, W., in an upper part of what is now the Red Lion public house. Engels had already drafted a question-and-answer Principles of Communism (it did not come to light till 1913) but he now wrote to Marx: 'I believe we had better drop the catechism form and call the thing Communist Manifesto'. Meeting in Brussels, the two friends worked jointly on the 'Manifesto's' text; the manuscript reached London at the beginning of February 1848 and was promptly produced in pamphlet form by a German printer in Bishopsgate; thus bulk supplies began to arrive on the Continent just as the first wave of the revolution 1848 broke over France and Germany. The revolutionary upsurge in Europe owed nothing to the 'Manifesto'; but the panic-stricken authorities found its subversive sentiments a good excuse for action against its authors. Marx and his wife were arrested and expelled from Belgium" (PMM).
