This picture was executed circa 1881, approximately two years after Cassatt made her debut with the Impressionists in Paris in their fourth exhibition. Also known as La Serre, this work is related to a larger painting, Lydia Crocheting in the Garden at Marly (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) which depicts a closer view of Lydia.
This picture will be included in the Cassatt Committee's revision of Adelyn Dohme Breeskin's catalogue raisonné of the works of Mary Cassatt.
