Further details
The two Ibibio masks on offer from the Art Institute of Chicago demonstrate the dichotomy of life as portrayed in the masks worn for the important Ekpo society. In the offered Hammer mask, we see the elegant face and ideas associated with beauty in the slightly parted lips about to speak and the downcast eyes - intelligence, order, control.
Cf. Van Kooten (Toos) and van den Heuvel (Gerard), eds., Sculpture from Africa and Oceania, Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller: Otterlo, 1990, Cat.no.35, for a closely related mask formerly in the Van de Velde Collection.

Lot Essay

Cf. Van Kooten (Toos) and van den Heuvel (Gerard), eds., Sculpture from Africa and Oceania, Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterlo, 1990, cat.no.35, pour un masque très proche de la collection Van de Velde.
