Lot Essay

Maris painted the present painting after a lithograph by Charles Rochussen (1814-1894), which was published in the Kunstkronijk (10, 1841-42, p. 38). Matthijs' father worked at the printing house Führli in The Hague, were the Kunstkronijk was published, and would bring home prints for his sons to copy and practice.
