Lot Essay

Max Volkhart received his early art education initially at the Königlich-Preussischen Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf under the tutelage of A. Müller and H. Lauenstein, and later with Eduard von Gebhardt. Later in his career Volkhart traveled to Belgium and Holland, where he mainly executed nature studies and landscape paintings. In 1881 in Rotterdam he completed a major panaroma of the Battle of Seeschlacht near Nieuport where the Prince of Orange defeated the Spanish naval fleet as well as the army.

His numerous works mainly depict scenes of everyday life of the 19th Century bourgeoisie with great emphasis on the accurate rendering of period details.
