Lot Essay

'Zone 14 is a seminal work within my artistic journey as it is one of the very first times I created a surface using one repetitive, yet autonomous element, the movements of which are superimposed and interwoven: 14 x 14 squares in which converge fixed lines (both vertical or horizontal) and a mobile line, following a variation of 5° from one square to another. This was also my first experiment using the “masking” technique, which gives the painted surface a very slight relief and that re-affirms the black colour.
The painting was first exhibited at the Haut-Pavé gallery in Paris in 1974, and later that same year at the International Festival of Cagnes-sur-Mer, where it caught the public’s eye, before becoming the centre of an installation that I executed for the Paris Biennial, located rue de Bourgogne. It is one of the very few surviving works from that period that was spared from the flood that ruined my studio back in 2003.'
