8° (159 x 98mm). Typographic ornaments, roman, italic and greek type. (Some light browning and spotting.) Contemporary sheep, gilt arms and monogram of J.-A. de Thou [Olivier 216, fer 8] and his wife Gaspard de La Chastre on sides, their monogram [Olivier 216, fer 9] in spine compartments (slightly worn). Provenance: Jacques-Auguste de Thou (binding, shelfmark on front cover and pastedown, gift inscription from the author).

PRESENTATION COPY to Jacques-Auguste de Thou by the great Dutch philologist, Johannes van Meurs, who by the age of 13 was composing Latin and Greek verse and writing commentaries on classical authors. It is possible Meurs met de Thou when travelling as tutor to the children of Joannes Barneveldt, when he visited many of the great European scholars and their libraries.
