Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dott. Giancarlo Sestieri for confirming the attribution to Rocca, on the basis of photographs (private communication, 20 August 2008). The attribution had been previously confirmed by Dott. Federico Zeri in his communications with Julius Held. What may have been a companion piece with nearly identical measurements, The Expulsion of Adam and Eve, was exhibited at the Schaeffer Galleries in New York in 1942 (Genius of Baroque Painting, no. 28).
