Lot Essay

The composition is indebted to Tosini's Holy Family in the Museo Bandini, Fiesole, in which the figure of Saint Joseph is included in the left background (see B. Berenson, Italian Pictures of the Italian Renaissance - Florentine School, II, London, 1963, pl. 1300). A version of that picture was sold, Sotheby's, New York, 30 January 1998, lot 24 ($90,500).
