A fine early botanical study of Rosa centifolia, showing the flower at three stages of the development of the bloom: in full-bloom, a half-opened bud and a bud. Van Huysum was from one of the most famous families of Dutch flower painters. The dynasty was started by his father, and reached its zenith with Jan van Huysum (Michiel's brother), but also involved another brother (Justus, the younger) and Jan's daughter Maria.
