Lot Essay

Minnie Evans began drawing on Good Friday, 1935, after a voice in a dream told her to “draw or die.” Her pieces are visionary, lyrical works that depict biblical scenes and spirits, and they reveal the blurred line between the artist’s visions and the world around her. This piece is a particularly impressive example of Evans’s work due to its scale and the figural angels within a near-symmetrical composition.
